Military Personnel and Veterans

Working with veterans was the catalyst for Learn Scuba Chicago to become a not-for-profit scuba organization. Various staff have trained with the Handicap Scuba Association (HSA) and Diveheart and continue to train our current group of volunteers.  We can offer certifications to people with a variety of limitations. From traumatic brain injury to quadriplegia - nothing can stop our Vets, and we are proud to swim next to them and expand their horizons

We started working with military veterans in 2013 and have enjoyed many accomplishments. These include adding new Open Water Divers from our Veteran events, creating opportunities to train staff in adaptive scuba for people with disabilities (NUIA Adaptive Training and the HSA Program), and offering special Discover Dive events for military and their families.

We offer two types of scholarships to Veterans who qualify:

  • An individual scholarship for Veterans to become Open Water Certified
  • A joint scholarship program for Veterans and their family members can get Open Water Certified

All scholarships are reviewed and approval is decided by the Learn Scuba Chicago Scholarships & Community Programs Committee and by the Board of Directors.

Our organization wants to foster a sense of safety, community, and camaraderie among military members and their families - and offer a fun way for everyone to get together and blow some bubbles!
